Remember Me

Sable glanced over at him and smiled.

"How have you been lately, Bryant?"

"Thinking." he said, in a peaceful tone, "You know, you've always been my best friend." he smiled, "Do you remember when we used to lay on your bedroom floor, late in the afternoon when it was starting to get dark, and listen to the eerie, neurotic music? What was that band called?"

"Neutral milk hotel."

"Yes." he chuckled, "That was it."

"Yeah, I remember."

"And do you remember that Valentine's day when that silly girl gave me a whole bunch of those little chalky hearts and we were spitting them at each other?"

"Of course I do, they got all stuck in my hair, it was gross." she laughed, running a hand through her hair. He laughed too.

"You know what I always loved?" Sable said, looking out the window at the surrounding woods as they wizzed through them. "How we use to go to the park and just sit on the bench..the one in front of the sidewalk, under that weeping willow..we'd just sit there for hours and people watch.."

"Yeah." Bryant mused, "What is it about critiquing the clothes of innocent passer-bys that is so much fun?"

"I don't know." she laughed.

"Hey, remember when we were ten and we tried to make a chalk mural that covered my whole driveway?" Bryant asked, a grin spreading across his face.

"Yeah! We kept wearing the chalk down so low that we would scrape up our knuckles on the pavement when we tried to use it. I still have a scar." she showed him her hand so he could see the white mark, interfering with the lines of her knuckle.

Bryant laughed, "And Sab, do you remember when I tried to ride my bike down that huge hill by your house with you sitting on the handlebars?"

"Oh, yeah.." Sable groaned.

"I've still got that scar...oh! And do you remember the time we were making sundaes and we got into that huge whipped cream fight in your kitchen?"

"That took forever to clean up." Sable remembered, shaking her head.

Bryant laughed.

"It did...Remember that time we got thrown out of the library for talking too loud?"

"You did that on purpose."

"You're right." Bryant laughed, "I did."

"Do you remember that time when we were eight and we had that video game waar to see who got the last Dr. Pepper?"

"Yes." Bryant laughed.

"But, after I won, you kept giving me those looks until I shared it with you."

"Yeah, that look worked everytime." Bryant chuckled, leaning his head back against the fake leather of the bus seat, "Do you remember when we were five and decided to get married."

"Of course." Sable laughed, "I remember."

"Remember when we ran out of gas on the freeway?"

"That wasen't funny." Sable said, stubbornly.

"Come on, yes it was." he nudged her with his his shoulder and she smiled.

"Maybe a little." she giggled, "Do you remember that Christmas eve when we were alone at your house and we got snowed in until the next morning?"

"Oh, our parents were a nervous wreck...God, I remember, we were at your house for the party, then they sent us back to get more Christmas albums to play.."

"Yeah, that was it! Man, we ran rabid in that house all night."

"Well, we were only twelve, we'd never been left alone over night."

"Remember that night we watched The Sixth Sense?"

"Ohh.." Bryant groaned, "You made me stay up with you all night."

"Oh shut up, you were just as scared as I was."

"Was not." he protested.

"Was too."

"Oh! Remember that one time?"

Sable smiled at his attempt to change the subject.

"That one time when...I can't think of anything else..."

Sable sighed.

"Do you remember, Bryant, when I dropped my necklace in the river? I remember...I remember how you jumped in after it. I remember how the undertow washed you up against the rocks. Remember?..You hit your head and you got knocked out. I remember how I tried to get to you but it was too late.."

Bryant smiled, sadly.

"I do remember." He said, softly, "So, do you think you'll remember me?"

She returned his sad smile.

"Always."

"Then I guess I'll see you between the stars someday."

"Goodbye for now, Bryant." Sable whispered.

"..For now.."

The bus stopped at the airport and Sable gathered up her bags and got off.

Her flight wouldn't leave for a while, but she would find ways to pass the time. For now.
